Marché St. Georges

I met Pascal, his wife Janaki and their adorable daughter, Lola, back in December. Pascal was telling me about the place to go for coffee: Le Marché St. George, located at the corner of 28th and St. George just three blocks east of Main Street. He, along with his wife and her sister, Klee, opened this beautiful boutique grocery store smack-dab in the middle of the neighbourhood in late-2010. It’s described by Janaki as a ”general store meets Vermeer painting”.

This small but quaint, Parisienne-esque space has quite a variety of merchandise ranging from local farm-fresh cheeses, eggs and meats, along with ceramics, linens, cocolico chocolate and more. (I even saw diapers on the top shelf!) And being the finicky coffee drinker that I am, this IS the place for coffee! Especially alongside a croissant (which are made fresh every morning) that the sisters spent much of last year perfecting by going around town tasting every pastry chef’s creation to make sure they were bringing in the very best to Marché St. George. I’m pretty sure they did a thorough investigation of this task ’cause the almond croissant I ate has got to be the best I’ve ever tasted’ mmm!!!

So, if you don’t live in the ‘hood, it’s definitely worth the drive into town with a friend for lunch ’cause the sandwiches are also much to be desired.
